How to use the Image Converter

  1. Drop the images you want to convert, choose them, or paste one.
  2. Pick the format to convert to. For JPG and WebP, set the quality.
  3. If the images have transparent areas and you are converting to JPG or BMP, choose the background colour.
  4. Download each file, or all of them as a ZIP.

What does converting an image format do?

Converting rewrites the same picture in a different file format. JPG is best for photos, PNG for graphics that need sharp edges or transparency, WebP for smaller files on the web, and BMP for old software that needs uncompressed images. The picture itself does not change, but file size and features such as transparency do.

Runs entirely in your browser. Your files are never uploaded to SBGeeks or anyone else.

How it works

Your browser decodes each image and redraws it on a canvas, which is then saved in the new format. Formats this browser cannot write are hidden from the list rather than silently saved as something else. BMP files are written by the tool itself, because browsers do not save BMP natively.

JPG and BMP cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels are placed on the background colour you choose (white by default) instead of turning black.

Useful for

  • PNG to JPG for smaller photo files
  • JPG or PNG to WebP for faster websites
  • WebP to JPG or PNG for software that cannot open WebP
  • SVG logos to PNG for documents and social profiles

Limitations

  • Animated GIF and WebP files are converted as one still frame.
  • HEIC photos can only be opened in browsers that support them, such as Safari.
  • Converting a JPG to PNG does not restore detail lost to JPG compression; it only stops further loss.
  • SVGs without a set width and height are rendered at 1024 px.

Questions

Should I use JPG, PNG or WebP?
Use WebP for websites: it supports transparency and is smaller than both. Use JPG for photos that must open everywhere, including old software. Use PNG for logos, screenshots and graphics with text or transparency.
Why did my transparent PNG get a white background?
JPG and BMP cannot store transparency. Choose a different background colour, or convert to PNG or WebP to keep transparent areas.
Can I convert many files at once?
Yes. Add as many as you like and download them as a single ZIP. To resize and rename them at the same time, use the batch converter.
