What is ecommerce SEO?

Ecommerce SEO is the practice of making an online store's category, product and content pages rank for the searches shoppers make. It combines site architecture, on-page optimisation, structured data and technical controls that are specific to large, filterable catalogues.

A store is harder to optimise than a brochure site for one reason: scale. Filters, sorting, variants and pagination can turn a few hundred products into tens of thousands of URLs, most of them near-duplicates. Search engines spend their time on those and miss the pages that matter.

The commercial opportunity is usually in category pages, because that is how people search: "women's trail running shoes", not a product code. Our work starts there and builds on the same foundations as our SEO services and technical SEO.

Signs you need it

Category pages do not rank

They have a heading, a product grid and nothing else, so search engines have little to judge relevance by.

Thousands of indexed filter URLs

Colour, size and sort parameters are being crawled and indexed, diluting the pages you want to rank.

Thin or copied product descriptions

Product pages use the manufacturer's text, identical to every other retailer selling the item.

Out-of-stock and discontinued products

Pages are deleted when stock runs out, throwing away the links and rankings they had earned.

What the service covers

Category page optimisation

Keyword mapping, titles, headings, introductory and supporting copy, and internal links, so each category targets one clear group of searches.

Product page optimisation

Unique descriptions for priority products, sound handling of variants, image optimisation and review content.

Faceted navigation

Rules for which filter combinations are indexable and which are not, using canonicals, robots directives and internal linking consistently.

Product structured data

Product, Offer and review markup that reflects what is actually on the page, so listings are eligible for price, availability and rating details.

Store architecture

A category hierarchy and internal linking structure that keeps important pages close to the homepage and distributes authority sensibly.

Buying guides and content

Guides and comparisons that answer pre-purchase questions and link into the categories they relate to.

How we work

  1. Catalogue audit

We crawl the store, measure how many URLs exist against how many should, and review category and product templates.

  2. Demand mapping

Search demand is mapped to categories. Gaps become new categories or subcategories; overlaps are merged.

  3. Template and content work

Fixes are made at template level where possible so they apply across the catalogue, then priority pages get individual attention.

  4. Measure revenue

Reporting follows organic sessions, conversion rate and revenue by landing page type.

What you receive

  • A catalogue audit with index bloat quantified
  • A category keyword map
  • Faceted navigation rules for your developers
  • Optimised category and priority product pages
  • A monthly organic revenue report

Who it suits

  • Shopify and WooCommerce stores
  • Catalogues with heavy filtering or many variants
  • Stores relying on paid traffic for most sales
  • Retailers migrating between platforms

What it costs

Ecommerce SEO is priced by catalogue size and platform, as a monthly retainer following an initial audit. Share the store address on the contact page and we will scope it.

Questions we are asked

Which pages matter most for ecommerce SEO?
Category pages, in most stores. They match how shoppers search and they do not disappear when a single product goes out of stock. Product pages matter for specific model and brand searches.
Should filter pages be indexed?
Only where a filter combination matches real search demand and has enough products to be useful, such as a brand within a category. Everything else should be kept out of the index.
What should happen to out-of-stock product pages?
If the product will return, keep the page live and say so. If it is permanently gone, redirect to the closest replacement or the parent category. Deleting the page loses what it had earned.
Do you work with Shopify?
Yes. Shopify has known constraints, including fixed URL structures and duplicate product paths through collections. We work within them and fix what the theme allows.
How does this fit with shopping ads?
Organic and paid listings appear on the same results page and share the same product data. Clean product information helps both. We manage paid campaigns through our Google Ads service.
